Despite this trend, etiquette experts emphasize that there are specific situations where tipping is not just appreciated but expected. Here are eight places where you should always tip, along with guidance on how much to leave.
When dining out, tipping is a well-known practice. It’s recommended to leave 15-20% of the total bill before tax, with more for exceptional service. “In the restaurant industry, sitting at the bar on date night or requesting to be seated in a particular server’s section each time will give you the opportunity to build rapport with servers,” says Bob Vergidis, chief visionary officer for restaurant software company Point of Sale Cloud. Demonstrating generous tipping can ensure top-notch service during future visits.
Hair salons and barbershops are another venue where tipping is crucial. A tip of 15-25% is advised, depending on the complexity and quality of service. Hairstylists often rent their space and buy supplies out of their pocket, making tips a significant part of their income. “These pros put significant time and effort into making sure you look your best,” notes Diane Gottsman, founder of The Protocol School of Texas. A good tip acknowledges their dedication and skill.
For food delivery services, a minimum of $3-$5 or 15-20% of the total order is appropriate. Delivery drivers often cover their own gas and car maintenance costs and work as independent contractors. A generous tip helps compensate for these expenses and ensures swift service.
Valet services at upscale venues also warrant a tip of $2 to $5 per car retrieval. “Many drivers will tip the valet when they drop off their car—especially drivers who want their cars handled with extra care,” says etiquette expert Jules Hirst. Tipping upfront can lead to quicker retrieval times and better care for your vehicle.
Hotel stays involve several opportunities for tipping, starting with the concierge. A tip of $5-$10 is suitable, with more for exceptional service. “Depending on the length of your stay and the number of times you will need their service, tip the hotel concierge after the first recommendation or service is arranged,” advises Hirst. This gesture often results in improved service for subsequent requests.
When ordering room service or utilizing housekeeping, tipping is again essential. Leave $2-$5 per night for housekeeping, especially if different staff members clean your room each day, and 15-20% for room service. “The generous tip can prompt the staff to be more attentive to your needs and prioritize your future orders,” says Hirst, enhancing your overall hotel experience.
