New research highlights that physical activity provides significant relief from depression symptoms, echoing the benefits of traditional treatments like therapy and medication. The study, analyzing nearly 5,000 participants across 73 clinical trials, indicates movement can be an empowering choice for those seeking options.

Exercise’s moderate effect on reducing depressive symptoms is comparable to results from antidepressants and counseling. Unlike medication, physical activity rarely causes unpleasant side effects, making it a safe addition to many treatment plans.

“Exercise provides an option for people experiencing depressive symptoms, along with pharmacological and psychological treatments, which should be offered to people to allow them to choose the best option in consultation with their health professional,” says Andrew Clegg, PhD, study lead author.

Experts stress that exercise should be part of an individualized plan and not used as a sole strategy for treating depression. Combining physical activity with lifestyle changes, therapy, and medication often leads to better outcomes.

“A big takeaway I got from this study is a ‘both/and’ landing spot about differences in exercise versus therapy or antidepressants in reducing depression symptoms,” says Derek Bowers, a licensed therapist. He encourages a balanced approach that doesn’t dismiss other effective strategies.

The research suggests that enjoyable activities like walking, yoga, jogging, or strength training can work well, with the best choice being one that fits your interests and lifestyle. While more research is needed on long-term benefits, getting moving can be a valuable, age-friendly addition to your mental wellness routine.
