Bariatric Surgery Tops GLP-1 Drugs for Lasting Weight Loss
Health Points
- Bariatric surgery leads to greater and longer-lasting weight loss compared to GLP-1 medications.
- GLP-1 drugs are effective for many but often fall short in real-world settings due to cost, side effects, and discontinuation.
- Choosing between surgery and medication depends on personal health goals, willingness for ongoing treatment, and existing health conditions.
A recent study presented at the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery highlights that bariatric procedures, such as sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass, far exceed GLP-1 medications in achieving lasting weight loss over two years. Surgery patients lost an average of 24% of their body weight, about 58 pounds, while those on GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Zepbound averaged a 5% decrease, or 12 pounds.
Even patients who diligently took GLP-1 injections for a year saw much smaller results than those who opted for surgery.
“Clinical trials show weight loss between 15-21% for GLP-1s, but this study suggests that weight loss in the real world is considerably lower,” Dr. Avery Brown, the lead study author, said.
Experts point out that clinical trials are performed in ideal conditions, but everyday life brings challenges like medication adherence and insurance limitations.
“We have to take the prescribing of them much more seriously. I don’t think we can be giving them out like candy.”
Bariatric surgery permanently changes the digestive system, resulting in a powerful ‘one and done’ effect, though it is invasive and carries risks like any major surgery.
GLP-1 medications remain valuable for those who prefer non-surgical options or do not qualify for surgery, serving as an important tool in managing obesity.
“There are plenty of people that would benefit from GLP-1s, and they’re still the best category of medication we have on the market to treat this disease.”
The decision between medication and surgery should be tailored to your preferences, other health conditions, and your personal approach to long-term obesity management.
