Amy Schumer Shares Recovery After Spinal Surgery
Health Points
- Amy Schumer is recuperating following a recent laminectomy, a spinal surgery performed to alleviate nerve pressure.
- Health experts note that such procedures are often recommended when non-surgical treatments for back pain and nerve compression are unsuccessful.
- Schumer has openly discussed her health experiences, including managing Cushing syndrome and endometriosis.
Amy Schumer is taking things step-by-step after her latest surgery on her spine. She recently appeared on social media from her hospital room, smiling with a walker as she embraced her recovery journey.
“Since my surfing injury back in the day my L5 has been killing me,” she explained in her post. “Today I got a laminectomy! It’s a short recovery and when I’m feeling better I will buy a bra!”
The comedian added a touch of humor, noting from her hospital bed, “Overheard post back surgery ‘pickle ball keeps this place in business.’”
According to medical experts, a laminectomy involves removing a portion of the vertebra to give nerves more space, which can relieve discomfort and weakness if other treatments haven’t helped.
Bony growths inside the spine can press on nerves and are more common with aging or arthritis. Genetics also play a part, increasing the risk of developing these overgrowths.
Schumer has been candid about her health, previously sharing her experience with Cushing syndrome, which she discussed in interviews and newsletters. She traced her diagnosis to steroid injections used for healing after surgical procedures.
She has also talked about her experiences with various weight management medications and underwent surgery to address endometriosis after her son’s birth.
“The doctor found 30 spots of endometriosis he removed. He removed my appendix because the endometriosis had attacked it.”
