10 Dog Breeds Happy Just Being Near You
Health Points
- Certain dog breeds are naturally content simply sharing your space and don’t need excessive attention.
- These companions are calm, people-focused, and offer affection without being clingy or anxious.
- Adopting a senior dog from a shelter can be a rewarding way to find a low-key, loving pet.
If you value quiet companionship, some dog breeds are especially suited to relaxing by your side rather than always seeking excitement or activity.
Veterinarian Dr. Matthew Murdoch emphasizes looking for calm, affectionate traits and considering a dog’s age, especially if you want a relaxed, content friend.
“If your priority is having a quieter dog that is content just being near you, go down to your local shelter and adopt a senior dog,” said Dr. Matthew Murdoch, Veterinarian and Director at Ferndale Kennels.
He reminds us, “Clingy is not the same as affectionate. Some dogs appear loving but are actually anxious. True companionship looks like dogs happy at a comfortable distance, and dogs that don’t panic and scratch at the door if not with you for two minutes.”
Among the breeds often happiest simply being near their humans are:
- Shih Tzus: Calm, affectionate, and bred for company, these dogs cherish closeness with their people.
- Pugs: Thrive on human connection, content sitting quietly at your feet without demanding constant fun.
- Cavalier King Charles Spaniels: Known as ‘shadow dogs’ for their affectionate, close presence without restlessness.
- Greyhounds: Although athletic, they are laid-back at home and enjoy lounging near you after some exercise.
- Great Danes: Gentle giants that usually prefer relaxing by your side rather than seeking constant activity.
- Maltese: Devoted to their humans and easily reassured by your company, even in quiet moments.
- Whippets: Form strong bonds and are satisfied relaxing beside you when their energy needs are met.
- English Bulldogs: Easygoing and affectionate, they love simply being around family but need to avoid heat and stress.
- Bernese Mountain Dogs: Very people-oriented, emotionally gentle, and enjoy quietly sharing your space if you have room.
- Basset Hounds: Relaxed and independent, they enjoy company while remaining low-maintenance and well-suited for calm homes.
If you’re considering a new furry companion, seeking out one of these breeds or adopting a senior dog may be the perfect route for anyone who appreciates calm, loyal friendship over energetic chaos.

Curious: why no retrievers (often used as service dogs and in my opinion are “half-human)? Yes, they need to be walked sometimes with ball -throwing, if possible, but are devoted to humans.
