The fall foliage season isn’t over—later this month, select regions across the country deliver the year’s final, vibrant color shows. If you love scenic outdoor adventures, planning a trip to catch these last bursts can make your October extra memorable.
In the Northeast, while New England’s leaves peak early, you’ll still discover peak colors in central and southern New Jersey, parts of the Southern Tier in New York, northwestern Pennsylvania, Delaware, and along the DelMarVa region late in October.
The Mid-Atlantic and Midwest offer last-minute leaf-peeping in eastern Virginia, western parts near the Ohio border, southern Ohio, northern Kentucky, southern Indiana, central Illinois, and central Iowa before Halloween.
The Mid-South, Southeast, and Plains States shine with peak hues in central North Carolina, the northern tip of South Carolina, northern Georgia, eastern Tennessee, and along the Arkansas-Missouri border. Peak color also reaches eastern and central Nebraska, southern South Dakota, and eastern Colorado at this time.
Western travelers can catch vibrant scenes in central and northern New Mexico, parts of southern Utah and Arizona, southern Nevada, and central southern Idaho. The West Coast offers pockets of peak leaves in eastern Washington, coastal and inland Oregon, and throughout northern and central California.
“Leaf peeping gives everyone a chance to appreciate nature’s beauty while enjoying fresh air and gentle movement,” says Rebecca Topp, a wellness travel expert.
