Starbucks faces big changes this weekend as it closes approximately 400 stores throughout North America. The company attributes these closures to locations that haven’t met customer expectations or financial goals.
CEO Brian Niccol shared that Starbucks is shifting back to a traditional coffeehouse environment, with plans to renovate nearly 1,000 stores for a cozier feel.
Stores set to close include the first unionized Starbucks in Seattle, as well as other sites across California, Arizona, Minnesota, and Oregon.
“While we’re making good progress, there is much more to do to build a better, stronger, and more resilient Starbucks,” Niccol stated in his latest letter to employees.
In addition to these closures, Starbucks will eliminate about 900 corporate positions to streamline operations, with affected staff receiving severance and benefits extensions.
