Now, a groundbreaking study published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology highlights its potential in anti-aging skincare.
Researchers at the Tokyo Metropolitan Institute for Geriatrics and Gerontology (TMIG) have delved into vitamin C’s impact on skin regeneration. This area of study is particularly significant because, with age, the epidermis—the skin’s outermost layer—begins to thin and loses its protective capabilities.
In their research, scientists developed a lab-grown model of the human epidermis. Here, skin cells were exposed to air on the surface while receiving a liquid vitamin C nutrient from below. This setup mimicked the natural nutrient supply to human skin from blood vessels, while still being exposed to the environment.
The findings were striking. Skin treated with vitamin C showed increased thickness due to the activation of specific genes responsible for cell growth and development. As noted in a press release, vitamin C “promotes the formation and division of keratinocytes,” which are crucial as they constitute 90 percent of the epidermal cells, forming the skin’s protective barrier.
The study observed a rise in Ki-67-positive cells, which signals active cell division. Akihito Ishigami, PhD, vice president of the Division of Biology and Medical Sciences at TMIG and lead author of the study, emphasized the significance of these results. He stated that vitamin C could be “a promising treatment for thinning skin, especially in older adults.” This could also be beneficial for those with damaged skin.
While vitamin C serums have been popular for years, primarily for enhancing collagen production, brightening skin, and reducing hyperpigmentation, this new research suggests a broader application. These serums typically target facial skin, but the systemic benefits of vitamin C might extend further.
As we age, our body’s collagen production diminishes, leading to wrinkles and reduced skin elasticity. Kristopher M. Day, MD, FACS, a board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon, has noted, “Its antioxidant properties support the skin’s natural regeneration process, and it aids in the repair of damaged skin cells.”
Increasing your vitamin C intake can be beneficial. “Vitamin C supplements, or better yet, a diet high in Vitamin C-rich fruits and vegetables, can significantly boost collagen production, enhancing skin elasticity and firmness,” Day advises.
Incorporating vitamin C into your daily routine, whether through diet or supplementation, could be a simple yet effective strategy in the pursuit of maintaining youthful, resilient skin.
