Natural Sources Offering Higher Calcium Than Yogurt

  • Non-dairy options can deliver more calcium per serving than traditional yogurt
  • Fortified plant beverages and leafy greens provide substantial calcium without dairy
  • Portion sizes matter when comparing calcium content across different foods

Many adults seek alternatives to yogurt when managing dietary calcium intake.

Certain foods and beverages contain more calcium per serving than the average yogurt cup.

Leafy greens such as collard greens and kale provide notable calcium levels.

“Collard greens offer about 268 milligrams of calcium in a cooked half-cup serving,” notes registered dietitian Lisa Young.

Fortified plant-based beverages represent another strong source.

A single cup of fortified almond milk can contain up to 450 milligrams of calcium.

“Fortified plant milks often match or exceed dairy products in calcium content,” explains nutrition researcher Dr. Angela Lemond.

Canned fish with edible bones, including sardines and salmon, supply calcium as well.

Three ounces of sardines contain roughly 325 milligrams of calcium.

“The soft bones in canned fish are an underappreciated calcium source,” says clinical dietitian Karen Ansel.

Portion awareness helps when comparing these options to standard yogurt servings.

Adults over forty benefit from consistent calcium intake for bone health maintenance.
