Greek yogurt delivers more protein per serving than regular yogurt

Health Points

  • Greek yogurt provides roughly double the protein found in traditional yogurt per serving.
  • Live active cultures in both varieties support digestive balance when consumed regularly.
  • Choosing plain, unsweetened options keeps added sugars to a minimum.

Greek yogurt undergoes an extra straining step that removes much of the liquid whey, leaving behind a thicker texture and more concentrated protein.

Regular yogurt retains more of that liquid whey, resulting in a thinner consistency and slightly lower protein content.

Both products contain live bacterial cultures that contribute to gut health.

“Greek yogurt typically offers 15 to 20 grams of protein in a single serving, whereas regular yogurt often provides 5 to 10 grams,” explains registered dietitian Sarah Mitchell.

The higher protein level in Greek yogurt can help adults maintain muscle mass as they age.

Regular yogurt’s milder flavor pairs well with fresh fruit or a drizzle of honey for a naturally sweet treat.

“The probiotics found in either yogurt support digestion, but the choice ultimately depends on your taste preference and nutritional goals,” Mitchell adds.

Opting for plain varieties of either yogurt avoids unnecessary added sugars.

Mixing either type with berries, nuts, or seeds creates a satisfying snack that supports steady energy throughout the day.
