Iron-Rich Foods That Outshine Steak on Your Plate

Health Points
- Plant foods like lentils and spinach deliver more iron per serving than a typical steak.
- Pairing iron sources with vitamin C foods boosts absorption naturally.
- Small daily servings of seeds and shellfish can meet iron needs without extra supplements.
Many adults worry about getting enough iron after cutting back on red meat. New nutrition data show several everyday foods actually surpass beef in iron content.
Half a cup of cooked lentils provides 3.3 milligrams of iron. The same portion of sirloin steak offers 2.9 milligrams. Spinach, pumpkin seeds, and oysters also rank higher per typical serving.
Registered dietitian Maria Torres explains the benefit. “Choosing these plant and seafood options keeps meals lighter while still supporting healthy blood levels.”
Health experts note that iron from plants is absorbed more slowly. Adding citrus, peppers, or tomatoes to the same meal helps the body take in more of it.
Nutrition professor Dr. Alan Briggs encourages variety. “Rotating lentils, spinach, and shellfish through the week gives steady iron without relying on one food group.”
Portion control matters. A small handful of roasted pumpkin seeds at lunch or a few oysters at dinner can close daily iron gaps for many adults over forty.
