Why Foam Rolling the Glutes Matters After Forty

Health Points

  • Foam rolling the glutes improves circulation and eases everyday stiffness.
  • Consistency matters more than intensity for lasting comfort.
  • Simple positioning changes let you target the right muscles safely.

Many adults notice tighter hips as the years pass. Foam rolling offers a gentle way to keep movement smooth.

Start by sitting on the roller with one ankle crossed over the opposite knee. Lean slightly toward the bent side and roll slowly across the fleshy part of the glute.

“Two minutes on each side every evening keeps my hips from locking up during long drives,” says physical therapist Karen Ellis.

Shift the roller higher or lower to reach different spots without pressing on bone. Breathe steadily and stop if anything feels sharp.

Consistency beats intensity. A short daily session yields steadier results than an occasional long one.

Place the roller just below the back of the hip bone and let your body weight create comfortable pressure. Small adjustments in angle change which muscle fibers receive the most attention.

“People think they need to go hard,” Ellis adds. “Gentle pressure plus regular practice works better for most of us over forty.”
