Research published in Diabetes Care found that higher citrus fruit consumption was associated with a lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes, independent of other dietary factors. The study tracked more than 187,000 participants over multiple decades.

Compounds in grapefruit can interfere with enzymes that metabolize certain statins, blood pressure medications, and other drugs, potentially leading to elevated drug levels in the bloodstream.

If you take prescription medications, it’s worth discussing grapefruit consumption with your healthcare provider. Other citrus fruits typically don’t pose the same interaction concerns.

The anti-inflammatory properties of citrus compounds may also play a role in healthy aging. Chronic low-grade inflammation is linked to numerous age-related conditions, including cardiovascular disease, cognitive decline, and arthritis. The antioxidants in citrus fruits help neutralize free radicals that contribute to cellular damage and inflammation.
