“COVID vaccines are very effective at preventing severe illness, hospitalization, and death,” says Dr. Robert Hopkins, medical director of the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases.
The vaccines have been updated to target new virus variants and supply modestly stronger immunity against circulating strains, according to recent studies. Experts expect these vaccines to protect people for four to six months.

Dr. Georges Benjamin, executive director of the American Public Health Association, notes the precise effectiveness of these new vaccines will become clearer as more real-world data comes in.
Eligibility covers adults 65 and older or those aged 6 months to 64 years with at least one condition that raises the risk for severe COVID-19. Current CDC guidance lists such conditions, including diabetes, heart and kidney diseases, cancer, and lifestyle factors like smoking.
