Sister Jean Shares Her Secrets to Longevity

At 106, Sister Jean Dolores Schmidt, chaplain for Loyola University’s men’s basketball team, remains a campus legend and source of inspiration. As she welcomed another basketball season, Sister Jean encouraged everyone to celebrate—even as she recovered from a difficult summer that kept her away from campus in 2025.

Known as the beloved “basketball nun,” she’s famous for her uplifting advice and unwavering spirit. “Let your dreams become reality. Don’t let anybody stop you,” she advised students on her birthday, reminding everyone to stay true to themselves.

Her enduring role with Loyola’s men’s team, especially during their storied 2018 NCAA Final Four run, made her a fan favorite. Players appreciate her support and wisdom:

“She’s like another coach. She knows her stuff.”

Even at 105, she stayed active on campus, connecting with students, working five days a week, and embracing technology. But to her, it’s the relationships that matter most.

“I love every bit of it. … It just makes me very joyful,” she shared. “These students are a joy to work with. I learn so much from them, and I know they learn from me.”

Sister Jean credits her vibrant life to a few key habits: spending time with younger people, staying busy, and always having a sense of purpose. She believes keeping the mind active and being adaptable are essential:

“If you’re not moving forward, you’re going to get left behind real quick.”

Genetics also play a part, she notes, as longevity runs in her family. For self-care, she prioritizes quiet time for prayer and reflection every morning and evening, which helps her wake up and go to bed with gratitude.

She practices moderation with food, enjoying a hearty lunch and a lighter dinner, always focusing on balance rather than restriction.
