Southwind Foods is recalling specific frozen shrimp products, including both cooked and raw varieties, after concerns over Cesium-137 contamination. The U.S. FDA is investigating shrimp processed by BMS Foods in Indonesia for potential exposure to this radioactive material.
Repeated consumption of food contaminated with Cesium-137 may increase the risk of cancer. The CDC notes that high levels of Cesium-137 can cause more acute health issues such as burns and radiation sickness, but low-level exposure is generally linked to long-term risk.
The recalled shrimp were sold under brands like Sand Bar, Arctic Shores, Best Yet, Great American, and First Street. Sales occurred between July 17 and August 8 across states including Alabama, Arizona, California, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Utah, Virginia, and Washington.
