What Your Social Circle Could Be Doing to Your Biological Age

Surrounding yourself with people who constantly create drama or problems does more than ruin your mood. New research suggests these stressful connections can also speed up your biological clock and affect long-term health.

A study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences examined “hasslers” — people who frequently cause problems or make life difficult. Data from more than 2,000 participants found that these negative ties are common and often hit people with existing health or social vulnerabilities hardest.

“Social relationships are fundamental to human health.”

Experts say humans are wired for connection, so the people around us can strongly influence our energy and outlook. When interactions stay negative, the body may remain in a heightened stress state that leads to physical wear and tear.

Health Points

  • Each additional “hassler” in a social network is linked to a 1.5% increase in the pace of biological aging.
  • Ongoing exposure to difficult people is associated with higher BMI, larger waist-to-hip ratios, and poorer overall physical health.
  • The biggest impact often shows up in mental health, including higher levels of anxiety and depression.

Managing these relationships often means setting value-based boundaries instead of reacting out of fear. If cutting ties is not possible, experts recommend self-care, meditation, and exercise to help buffer the stress.

By protecting your peace and limiting the influence of high-conflict people, you may help protect your biological age and improve your quality of life.
