  • Pumpkin seeds deliver more magnesium per ounce than almonds
  • Magnesium supports muscle and nerve function as we age
  • Both foods provide lasting satisfaction without refined sugar

Older adults are looking for simple ways to stay strong and energetic, and small dietary choices can make a real difference. Choosing between pumpkin seeds and almonds is one of those choices. Both snacks deliver important minerals, yet one edges ahead when magnesium content is measured.

“Magnesium helps keep muscles relaxed and nerves calm, especially after a long day,” notes registered dietitian Karen Fischer. The mineral also supports steady energy and restful sleep.

One ounce of roasted pumpkin seeds supplies about 150 milligrams of magnesium, while the same portion of almonds provides roughly 75 milligrams. The difference is clear on nutrition labels. A small handful of pumpkin seeds can cover a larger share of the daily goal for women over 50 and men over 50.

Almonds still earn their place on the snack roster. They contain heart-friendly fats, vitamin E, and fiber that aid digestion. Their mild flavor pairs well with fruit or yogurt. Portion control remains helpful, because almonds are calorie-dense.

“Both foods fit easily into a balanced eating pattern,” adds Fischer. “The key is consistency rather than perfection.”

Health professionals encourage pairing either option with protein-rich meals. A sprinkle of pumpkin seeds over a salad or a few almonds alongside cottage cheese can turn an ordinary plate into a nutrient-packed one. Older adults who keep convenient portions on hand often find these snacks replace less nourishing choices without feeling restrictive.
