Lip Balm Habits That May Leave Lips Drier

Health Points

  • Regular balm use can create a cycle where lips feel dependent on frequent reapplication.
  • Formulas heavy in menthol or camphor may temporarily plump lips but can increase dryness later.
  • Dermatologists recommend balms with simple occlusive ingredients like petrolatum or mineral oil to lock in moisture.

Many adults reach for lip balm dozens of times each day, yet the ritual sometimes backfires. The skin on the lips lacks oil glands, so it relies on external products for protection. When a balm contains ingredients that evaporate quickly, the surface can feel tight once the product is gone.

“If a product creates a cooling or tingling sensation, it often signals the presence of ingredients that stimulate blood flow but can compromise the skin barrier,” says board-certified dermatologist Dr. Michelle Henry.

Repeated licking or rubbing also removes the thin layer of natural oils lips need. Simple changes, such as choosing thicker ointments at bedtime and avoiding scented or flavored balms during the day, can reduce the urge to reapply.

Staying hydrated supports skin from within, while a humidifier in dry indoor environments helps prevent evaporation at the surface. Over time, these habits can lessen the constant need for balm and leave lips softer without extra layers.
