Potassium-Rich Alternatives That Skip the Banana

Health Points
- Potassium supports heart rhythm and steady blood pressure levels in adults over 40.
- Daily intake targets remain 3,400 mg for men and 2,600 mg for women according to current guidelines.
- Whole-food sources such as avocados, spinach, and potatoes deliver the mineral without added sugars.
Many adults find they need to increase potassium yet prefer to avoid bananas. Nutritionists now point to everyday produce that quietly fills the gap.
One medium baked potato with skin supplies roughly 930 mg of potassium. Spinach, when cooked, concentrates even more of the mineral per cup.
Avocados add creaminess along with 487 mg per half fruit. Their healthy fats further support cardiovascular health.
“Whole foods remain the most reliable way to meet potassium goals,” registered dietitian Lisa Young explains.
Beans and lentils offer another straightforward option. A single cup of cooked white beans provides 829 mg, while lentils deliver 731 mg in the same portion.
Yogurt also contributes meaningfully. One cup of plain low-fat yogurt contains about 573 mg, pairing well with berries or nuts for breakfast.
“Small, consistent choices at each meal make the biggest difference,” Young adds.
Winter squash, beet greens, and salmon round out the list, each bringing substantial potassium alongside complementary nutrients such as fiber and omega-3s.
