Sleep apnea—a condition where breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep—affects an estimated 39% of adults over 40. Weight gain, which commonly occurs in midlife, increases risk by narrowing airways.

Restless leg syndrome also becomes more prevalent with age. This neurological condition creates uncomfortable sensations in the legs and an irresistible urge to move them, making it difficult to fall asleep or stay asleep.

Many people suffer for years without realizing these are diagnosable, treatable conditions rather than just “getting older.”

Stress and Mental Load Peak

Each trip to the bathroom disrupts your sleep cycle, making it harder to accumulate enough deep sleep and REM sleep for optimal physical and cognitive restoration.

Pain and Chronic Conditions Interrupt Sleep

Arthritis, back pain, and other musculoskeletal issues become more prevalent with age and can make it difficult to find a comfortable sleeping position. Conditions like acid reflux, which worsens when lying down, can also fragment sleep.

Regular exercise improves sleep quality, but timing matters—vigorous activity too close to bedtime can be stimulating. Aim to finish intense workouts at least three hours before bed.
