In a move described as historic, the White House has unveiled a sweeping plan to make GLP-1 drugs more affordable nationwide and to broaden coverage for many Americans.
Monthly self-pay prices for medications such as Ozempic and Wegovy are set to drop from over $1,000 to $350 through a new program rolling out in 2026.
How the Plan Expands Access
The initiative, under the Most-Favored-Nation policy, ensures Americans pay no more for featured drugs than patients in other developed nations.
Medicare Part D will launch a pilot program to cover these medications for eligible adults aged 65 and older with certain health conditions related to weight and heart health.
This marks the first time Medicare will cover GLP-1 treatments for obesity, with a $50 monthly copay for qualifying beneficiaries, and Medicaid programs will also receive access at reduced prices.
For those who do not use Medicare or Medicaid, discounted options will be available through the TrumpRx.gov portal, set to launch in early 2026.

“These low prices will enable Medicare to cover Wegovy and Zepbound for patients with obesity and related comorbidities for the first time,” according to the White House release.
Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. stated, “Americans will lose 125 million pounds by this time next year.”
Obesity medicine specialist Yuval Pinto, MD, cautions that hurdles remain: “Medicaid coverage varies by state, eligibility criteria are restrictive, and private insurance coverage remains limited.”
