For those exploring natural health solutions, ashwagandha might be a game-changer you haven’t yet considered. This remarkable plant, native to India, Africa, and parts of the Middle East, has been a staple in Ayurvedic medicine for centuries. Known for its ability to reduce stress and inflammation, ashwagandha is now gaining attention for its potential to enhance brain function and elevate mood.
Ashwagandha is classified as an adaptogen. According to UCLA Health, adaptogens are “herbs, roots, and other plant substances (like mushrooms) that help our bodies manage stress and restore balance after a stressful situation.” To qualify as an adaptogen, a substance must support the body’s ability to cope with stress and aid in returning to a stable state.
Recent studies have highlighted the cognitive benefits of ashwagandha. A new study published in a scientific journal found a strong correlation between ashwagandha supplements and improved brain performance and mood. This double-blind study involved 59 participants, divided into two groups. The treatment group received a daily capsule containing 225 mg of liposomal ashwagandha, while the control group was given a placebo.
On the first day, participants provided a fasting blood sample and completed various cognitive assessments, such as Word Recall and Stroop Test, before taking their first capsule. After 30 days of consistent supplementation, they underwent the same tests again. The results were promising, with the ashwagandha group showing significant improvements in five out of seven cognitive tests, including Word Recall and Digital Vigilance.
The study authors noted, “Results support contentions that ashwagandha supplementation (225 mg) may improve some measures of memory, attention, vigilance, attention, and executive function while decreasing perceptions of tension and fatigue in younger healthy individuals.” Participants reported feeling less tense and fatigued, suggesting a notable mood enhancement.
However, it’s important to acknowledge the study’s limitations. The research included only 59 individuals, and participants were screened to exclude those with common health conditions such as sleep disorders, cardiovascular disease, and anxiety. This narrow focus means further research is necessary to determine the benefits for individuals with these conditions.
