Citrus-Free Sips Delivering More Vitamin C Than Orange Juice

Health Points
- Three everyday beverages contain higher vitamin C levels than a standard glass of orange juice.
- Proper vitamin C intake supports immune function and collagen production.
- Choosing nutrient-dense drinks can help maintain daily vitamin goals without added sugar.
Orange juice has long been considered the go-to morning drink for vitamin C. Yet several common beverages quietly surpass it in this essential nutrient.
Registered dietitian Karen Ansel notes that many people overlook these alternatives. “Most folks reach for OJ without realizing other pantry staples pack a bigger punch,” she explains.
Guava nectar, for instance, delivers roughly double the vitamin C found in an equal serving of orange juice. A single cup provides about 188 milligrams, well above the daily recommendation for adults.
Kiwifruit smoothies rank second. Blending two peeled kiwis with water yields about 166 milligrams of vitamin C per serving. The fruit’s natural tartness reduces the need for added sweeteners.
Red and yellow bell-pepper juices round out the list. Strained juice from two large peppers supplies close to 210 milligrams, surpassing both guava and kiwi options.
Nutrition researcher Dr. Taylor Wallace cautions that heat and light can degrade vitamin C. “Store these juices in dark containers and consume them soon after preparation,” he advises.
Health professionals recommend pairing these drinks with meals containing healthy fats. This practice aids absorption of other fat-soluble vitamins present in the same foods.
