Norovirus Outbreak Hits Cruise Ship in 2025
Health Points
- Over 90 people fell ill with norovirus on a Royal Caribbean cruise ship in late September 2025.
- The virus spreads easily through close contact and contaminated surfaces or food.
- Handwashing with soap and water is the most effective prevention method.
More than 90 individuals became sick with norovirus aboard the Serenade of the Seas this fall, prompting swift response measures by Royal Caribbean and the CDC. The highly contagious virus led to an outbreak affecting about 5% of passengers and several crew, with symptoms including sudden nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
All cases were quickly isolated and strict cleaning protocols were implemented onboard to stop further spread. Norovirus spreads efficiently among groups, especially on cruise liners where shared spaces increase exposure.
Norovirus Prevention and Cruise Trends
This is the third gastrointestinal illness outbreak on a Royal Caribbean ship this year, with cruise authorities emphasizing the importance of sanitation and quick action. According to CDC tracking, 2025 has already surpassed previous years with 14 confirmed norovirus outbreaks on cruise ships operating in U.S. waters.
Norovirus symptoms generally come on quickly within 12 to 48 hours of exposure and last up to three days, but those affected can still spread the virus even after they feel better. Less common symptoms such as headache and low fever can also appear.
“Traveling on cruise ships exposes people to new environments and high volumes of people, including other travelers. This exposure can create the risk for illness from contaminated food or water or, more commonly, through person-to-person contact,” the CDC explained.
To help avoid norovirus while traveling, the CDC advises frequent handwashing with soap and water, isolating if sick, reporting illness onboard, steering clear of ill passengers, and following the ship’s safety guidance. Alcohol-based hand sanitizers are not effective against norovirus, making thorough handwashing crucial.
Stay proactive about your health during travel by practicing good hygiene and staying informed about onboard health protocols.
