EU Bans Gel Polish Ingredient Over Fertility Fear

  • The EU will ban the gel polish ingredient TPO due to animal studies suggesting fertility risks.
  • There is no strong evidence in humans linking TPO in gel manicures to health issues.
  • Dermatologists and reproductive experts urge caution but stress data is limited.

Europe is taking a precautionary step by banning TPO, a key gel polish ingredient, after animal studies suggested possible fertility concerns. Starting September 1, EU salons must dispose of gel polishes with TPO, while U.S. salons can still use them.

“We don’t have enough data yet to be extremely worried, but we also don’t have enough data to support the safety of the use of gel nail polish containing TPO in humans,” says Dr. Sharrón L. Manuel, a fertility specialist.

TPO helps gel polishes harden quickly under UV or LED lamps, delivering the long-lasting and glossy look many love. Not all gel polishes use TPO, and the ingredient’s absorption through the nail is considered low, but salon workers could have higher exposure from dust or vapors.

“This precautionary ban — meaning no dangerous effects of TPO have yet to be observed — seems reasonable given the widespread popularity of gel manicures and the paucity of safety data,” adds dermatologist Dr. Chris Adigun.

Though the FDA currently permits TPO in U.S. products, anyone concerned about potential risks can request TPO-free polishes or limit gel manicures. If you’re planning a pregnancy or in early stages, consider minimizing exposure, experts advise.

The American Academy of Dermatology reminds us that other risks also exist with gel manicures, including brittle nails and possible UV exposure. Their healthy nail tips: use sunscreen on your hands, avoid picking at polish, soak just your fingertips when removing polish, take breaks between manicures, and moisturize nails and cuticles.
