A 2015 study published in JAMA Internal Medicine found that individuals using Benadryl or similar anticholinergic medications for three years or more had a 54% higher risk of developing dementia compared to those who used the medication for less than three months.

The risk of falls also increases with nightly Benadryl use. Dr. Walker explains that the drug can “affect balance and coordination,” which is particularly concerning for older adults. Harvard Medical School has identified Benadryl as one of the medications most likely to raise fall risk, as it suppresses the central nervous system, reducing alertness and slowing reactions. This risk is compounded when Benadryl is combined with other sedatives, such as alcohol.

Additionally, long-term Benadryl use can lead to bladder issues, such as urinary retention. This side effect can be particularly troublesome for individuals with pre-existing urinary problems or prostate enlargement, as noted by Dr. Walker.

Dr. Walker advises that the use of any medication for sleep aid should be “temporary and under the guidance of a healthcare professional.” Chronic insomnia should be evaluated to identify underlying causes, and doctors may recommend natural remedies like magnesium or melatonin, or lifestyle changes such as increased physical activity and dietary improvements.
