Navigating digestive discomfort can be challenging, especially when dealing with bloating and gas. Fortunately, certain foods can help alleviate these issues, thanks to their natural digestive enzymes. Gastroenterologist Joseph Salhab, DO, shares his top five food recommendations that can help ease gas, bloating, constipation, and even heartburn. These foods can be a game-changer for anyone seeking relief from digestive woes.

Pineapple

Pineapple is a top choice for combating gas and bloating. Dr. Salhab highlights that pineapple contains bromelain, a digestive enzyme that aids in breaking down protein.

This is crucial because consuming too much protein can sometimes lead to constipation. However, it’s essential to consume pineapple fresh or frozen, as bromelain levels decrease during canning and processing.

Papaya

Papaya is another excellent option for digestive health, particularly when ripe. Dr. Salhab notes that papaya helps break down protein and is beneficial for bloating.

He also mentions, “It’s helpful with bloating, and when you mix it into a smoothie, can help with acid reflux.” Moreover, papaya is rich in fiber, which plays a vital role in facilitating smooth digestion by softening and adding bulk to stool.

Mango

Mangoes are a sweet and effective remedy for digestive discomfort. They contain amylase, an enzyme that assists in breaking down carbohydrates.

Dr. Salhab suggests enhancing mango with honey, as it is an acid reflux-friendly sweetener. This combination can be a delightful and beneficial treat for your digestive system.

Avocado

Avocado is well-known for its high fiber content, but it also contains lipase, which aids in digesting fats. Dr. Salhab recommends enjoying avocado as a mash on “bloat-friendly sourdough with some olive oil.”

The benefits of avocado extend beyond digestion, as they are rich in healthy fats, vitamins E and K, and potassium. Carolina Schneider, MS, RD, notes, “They support heart health and digestion, aid in nutrient absorption, and provide essential nutrients such as potassium and fiber.”

These five foods can significantly improve your digestive health, offering relief from common issues like gas and bloating. By incorporating pineapple, papaya, mango, and avocado into your diet, you can enjoy their natural enzymes and nutrients that promote a healthier gut. Whether you’re dealing with occasional discomfort or looking to maintain digestive wellness, these foods are a delicious and effective solution.
