Discover the Metabolism-Boosting Juice That Aids Weight Loss, According to New Research

Metabolism is often taken for granted until it begins to slow down with age. Many people reminisce about the days when they could indulge in their favorite foods without worrying about weight gain. However, recent findings suggest that an “underappreciated” juice could revitalize metabolism and aid in weight loss.

A study conducted by Washington State University, published in the journal Nutrients, reveals that consuming 12 ounces of elderberry juice daily for a week can significantly enhance metabolic health. The study involved 18 overweight adults, divided into two groups: one drinking elderberry juice and the other receiving a placebo, all while following a standardized diet.

Participants who drank elderberry juice experienced notable improvements in their gut microbiome. There was an increase in beneficial bacteria and a reduction in harmful bacteria. The study highlighted that “a healthy gut microbiome is essential for nutrient absorption and supports physical and mental health.”

Additionally, elderberry juice consumption led to a 24 percent reduction in blood glucose levels, indicating a “significantly improved ability to process sugars following carbohydrate consumption,” along with a nine percent decrease in insulin levels.

Perhaps the most significant finding was elderberry’s role in fat metabolism. According to the study, those who consumed the juice “showed significantly increased fat oxidation, or the breakdown of fatty acids, after a high carbohydrate meal and during exercise.” This effect is attributed to elderberry’s rich content of anthocyanins, a type of flavonoid with antioxidant properties found in purple fruits and vegetables. The Cleveland Clinic notes that anthocyanins help reduce inflammation, lower blood pressure, and alleviate oxidative stress on cells.

“Elderberry is an underappreciated berry, commercially and nutritionally,” commented Patrick Solverson, the study’s corresponding author and an assistant professor at WSU’s Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine. “This study contributes to a growing body of evidence that elderberry, which has been used as a folk remedy for centuries, has numerous benefits for metabolic as well as prebiotic health.”

In the United States, elderberry is primarily recognized for its immune-boosting properties, especially during the COVID pandemic. However, elderberries, which grow on Sambucas trees native to Europe, boast one of the highest levels of anthocyanins. To match the anthocyanin content in 6 ounces of elderberry juice, one would need to consume four cups of blackberries.

Beyond weight management, elderberry is linked to lowering cholesterol and reducing the risks of cancer, heart disease, and Type 2 diabetes. However, the Cleveland Clinic warns that “in their uncooked state, elderberries are toxic and can cause diarrhea, vomiting, and nausea.”

While elderberry is commonly available in the U.S. as supplements, syrups, or gummies, retailers like Whole Foods, Walmart, and Amazon now offer elderberry juice and concentrate.
