Top Tips to Relieve Eye Strain Fast
Health Points
- Eye strain is common after extended screen use or detailed close work.
- Symptoms can include dry, irritated, or tired eyes, and even headaches.
- Regular breaks, maintaining moisture, and reducing glare help prevent discomfort.
Do your eyes feel tired or dry after hours at the computer or long drives? Eye strain can affect anyone, especially after focusing on screens or small details for long periods.
Common causes include not blinking enough when using electronics, poor lighting, and glare, which can make daily tasks harder on our vision.
Symptoms might include burning or itching, blurred vision, or headaches behind the eyes, and may even lead to poor posture if you’re straining to see clearly.
To reduce eye strain, follow the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. It’s also helpful to blink regularly to keep eyes moist and take breaks during long drives.
Keep digital screens and glasses clean, and wear polarized sunglasses to cut glare when driving. Adjust your workspace so screens are slightly below eye level and away from direct light or glare.
Position screens 20 to 26 inches from your face and ensure chair and desk height support healthy posture. Increase screen contrast and match room light to screen brightness.
The American Academy of Ophthalmology notes there’s no need for blue light glasses, but prescription computer glasses may help if you spend lots of time at a desk.
“Eye strain is rarely serious, but new or severe vision changes mean you should see a doctor right away,” says Dr. Joan Miller.
Most of the time, a few smart adjustments and regular care can keep your eyes feeling comfortable all day.
