  • Physical therapy can be tailored to personal milestones, even special moments like a proposal.
  • Sudden health issues, such as transverse myelitis, can create unexpected physical challenges.
  • Support from loved ones and a positive outlook can aid recovery and inspire perseverance.

Kyle Wicklund designed a memorable marriage proposal for his girlfriend, Victoria Caetano, combining a New Jersey beach setting with a special gathering at their favorite restaurant.

Just days before the event, he faced sudden leg weakness that sent him to the hospital, putting his plans in jeopardy.

With the encouragement of Caetano and his care team, Wicklund entered physical therapy with one personal objective: to kneel down on one knee for his proposal.

“I wanted to make it traditional but also picture perfect for her because I know it’s something that we’re going to remember for the rest of our lives,” he shares.

Physical therapist Maddie Barkow notes, “Kyle was not able to walk yet when he mentioned this goal to me.” She tailored therapy to help him safely kneel for the big moment.

Doctors discovered a benign pituitary tumor impacting his hormones and leading to further complications, including an adrenal crisis and inflammation in his spine known as transverse myelitis.

Through dedicated sessions, Wicklund strengthened his ability to kneel and regain stability, practicing repeatedly to be ready for his proposal day.

He focused on kneeling with his weaker leg, using a walker for balance and building confidence with each attempt.

“I could probably get down on one knee better than I could walk 100 feet, but that’s what I wanted to focus on and that’s what we practiced,” Wicklund reflects.

Caetano, who has experienced her own medical challenges, shared, “What he was going through was so incredibly difficult and would probably be so traumatizing and depressing for a lot of people. But Kyle never acted that way.” Their shared resilience helped them grow closer.

Just days after leaving the hospital, Wicklund surprised Caetano on the beach by getting down on one knee and proposing, with supportive families nearby to celebrate the milestone.

If you’re facing health obstacles, know that determination and the support of loved ones can make a powerful difference on your path toward meaningful life moments.
