Bigeminy: The Heart Rhythm That’s Harmless for Most, But Watch For Warning Signs
Ventricular bigeminy is a heart rhythm pattern where every normal heartbeat is followed by a premature contraction. It can feel like your heart is skipping a beat or flip-flopping, but it is often harmless in people with otherwise healthy hearts.
This sensation happens because the heart’s lower chambers contract slightly early, then pause briefly to reset the rhythm. During that pause, extra blood fills the heart, making the next beat feel stronger or more forceful in the chest.
Health Points
- Common triggers include caffeine, nicotine, stress, dehydration, and lack of sleep.
- Dizziness or chest pain should prompt a medical evaluation with an electrocardiogram or ultrasound.
- Persistent bigeminy over many years can occasionally weaken the heart muscle if left untreated.
If you notice unexplained fatigue or shortness of breath along with irregular heartbeats, consult a healthcare provider.
