Health Points

  • Forward Farms Grass-Fed Ground Beef has been recalled due to possible E. coli O26 contamination.
  • The recalled products were sold in six states and may still be in home kitchens.
  • Infection usually resolves on its own, but severe illness is rare.

Nearly 3,000 pounds of ground beef produced by Mountain West Food Group have been recalled after routine testing found E. coli O26, a less-common strain that can cause foodborne illness.

Recalled products include 16-ounce vacuum-sealed packages with “USE OR FREEZE BY 01/13/26” and establishment code EST 2083.

The affected beef was distributed to retailers in California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Pennsylvania, and Washington.

The USDA cautions that some consumers may still have these products at home.

If you’ve purchased the recalled ground beef, do not eat it; dispose of it or return it to the store for a refund.

The agency also recommends cleaning any surfaces that touched the raw product to reduce risk.

What to Know About E. coli Infection

E. coli infection from this strain may not cause immediate symptoms. According to the USDA, illness typically begins an average of 34 days after consumption.

Most people experience diarrhea and vomiting, but recover within a week with rest and proper hydration; antibiotics are not usually recommended.

“Rarely, serious complications like hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) can occur, especially in those with weakened immune systems and in older or younger adults.”

Warning signs of HUS include easy bruising, paleness, and reduced urination. Seek emergency care if these symptoms develop.

For most people, E. coli O26 infection remains mild and treatable at home.

Stay informed and protect your household by checking packaging and taking recall warnings seriously.
