FDA Expands Recall on Ground Cinnamon Brands
Health Points
- The FDA warns that 16 ground cinnamon brands are affected by a recent recall due to elevated lead levels.
- Lead exposure is especially risky for children, but adults can also experience long-term health problems.
- The affected ground cinnamon products may still be in consumers’ homes because of their long shelf life.
The Food and Drug Administration is expanding its recall to encompass 16 brands of ground cinnamon after detecting dangerously high lead levels. Officials caution that these products, which have been distributed nationwide, could pose a significant health risk if consumed.
This advisory follows earlier FDA recalls that traced the lead source in recalled applesauce pouches to contaminated cinnamon. Since then, the FDA has updated the list as additional brands were identified, with the most recent advisory announced on October 10, 2025.
Which Cinnamon Brands Are Impacted?
The recall, now extended in March 2024, covers specific batches and codes from more than a dozen distributors. Many of these products are likely still in kitchens due to their extended expiration dates.
While only 10 brands have issued formal recalls, the agency highlights 16 brands in total, including Roshni Foods, Haetae, Durra, Wise Wife, Jiva Organics, Super Brand, Asli, El Chillar, Marcum, SWAD, Supreme Tradition, Compania Indillor Orientale, ALB Flavor, Shahzada, Spice Class, and La Frontera.
The FDA couldn’t reach one brand, Haetae, to recommend a voluntary recall and advises consumers not to use any of the listed cinnamon products.
Lead Exposure Symptoms
Lead naturally occurs at trace levels in some foods, but these cinnamon products contained unsafe amounts. Children are particularly vulnerable, as noted by the American Academy of Pediatrics.
“Even low levels of lead can impair a child’s brain development, affecting focus, learning, and IQ,” the AAP states.
Common early symptoms in children may include headache, stomach pain, reduced appetite, or constipation. In adults, chronic lead exposure has been connected to kidney problems and high blood pressure, according to the FDA.
“Severe symptoms, such as confusion or lethargy, could mean the nervous system is affected and require immediate medical care,” the AAP warns.
If you suspect lead exposure from recalled cinnamon, particularly if you notice any symptoms, the FDA advises speaking with your healthcare provider right away.
Stay updated on recalled products and always check your pantry for affected items to protect your family’s health.
