Cindy McCain is temporarily stepping back as executive director of the U.N. World Food Program to prioritize her recovery from a recent minor stroke. The organization shared that she is currently returning home to Arizona, where she will focus on recuperating with her family.
Her medical team expects a full recovery over the coming weeks. Cindy, 71, received care in Italy and expressed gratitude for the treatment that has helped her progress so far.
“I want to thank the medical staff in Italy for the excellent treatment I received,” Cindy McCain said in a statement. “My recovery is progressing well thanks to their outstanding care. I look forward to continuing my recuperation at home in Arizona with my family.”
Cindy McCain, who became head of the World Food Program in March 2023, previously served as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations agencies for food and agriculture. She also experienced a minor stroke at age 49, which briefly affected her speech but from which she recovered fully.
Doctors attributed it to a small rupture in a blood vessel, possibly linked to high blood pressure.
