Jason Collins, a notable 13-year NBA veteran, is currently being treated for a brain tumor, according to a family statement released by the NBA on September 11. Collins, age 46, has asked for privacy and appreciates the support and prayers from the public as he focuses on his health.

“NBA Ambassador and 13-year NBA veteran Jason Collins is currently undergoing treatment for a brain tumor,” the statement read. “Jason and his family welcome your support and prayers and kindly ask for privacy as they dedicate their attention to Jason’s health and well-being.”

Best known for his years with the New Jersey Nets and being a finalist twice, Collins also played for several other teams before finishing his career with the Brooklyn Nets in 2014. The Nets shared a heartfelt message of encouragement for Collins and his family on social media, expressing their unwavering support.

In 2013, Collins became the first active player in any major American sports league to come out as gay, opening an important conversation about inclusivity in sports.

“I didn’t set out to be the first openly gay athlete playing in a major American team sport,” Collins reflected in a personal essay. “But since I am, I’m happy to start the conversation.”

Collins enjoyed a remarkable college basketball career at Stanford, where he played alongside his twin brother, Jarron, who also had a lengthy NBA journey and is now coaching with the New Orleans Pelicans. The family continues to ask for privacy as they support Jason in his treatment process.
