When Tania Rodrigues, 66, experienced a bizarre vision episode on her way to work, she initially brushed it off but soon found herself undergoing urgent medical exams.
After a brief episode of seeing multiples of everything ahead, Rodrigues sought emergency care and learned she had Stage 4 lung cancer that had spread to her brain and other organs.
“He said, ‘You have Stage 4 lung cancer with two brain (metastases),’” she recalls of the doctor’s words.
Despite a healthy lifestyle and no smoking for decades, her diagnosis was EGFR-positive non-small cell lung cancer—a type that can affect lifelong non-smokers.
Rodrigues began targeted therapy, which initially removed almost all brain metastases, and later transitioned to a combination of targeted therapy and chemotherapy when the disease recurred.
“The second node on my lung is gone. The primary node is reduced,” Rodrigues shares about her progress with new treatments.
Experts note an increase in non-smoking lung cancer, particularly among women, with risk factors still under study and many cases linked to genetic mutations such as EGFR.
Clinical trials of therapies like Rybrevant and Lazcluze have shown improved outcomes for those with advanced EGFR-positive lung cancers, according to Dr. Danny Nguyen.
Early lung cancer often lacks symptoms, making routine health checks and awareness of subtle changes, like a persistent cough or vision changes, especially important for older adults.
