When considering beverages that can support liver health, it’s essential to focus on those that offer protective benefits rather than those that could potentially cause harm. While many sugary and artificially flavored drinks are best avoided due to their high fructose content, which can lead to fatty liver disease, certain beverages can actually aid in maintaining a healthy liver. Gastroenterologist Joseph Salhab, MD, shares insights into seven drinks that could bolster liver health.

Chia Seed Water

Chia seed water has gained popularity on social media, but it’s more than just a trend. According to Dr. Salhab, chia seeds are rich in magnesium and fiber, both of which are beneficial for metabolic liver conditions. Soaking chia seeds in water creates a gel-like consistency that can help absorb toxins causing inflammation. Daryl Gioffre, DC, explains, “When chia seeds are soaked, they form a gel-like consistency, absorbing up to 27 times their weight, helping mop up toxins that are causing inflammation.” To enhance this drink, Dr. Salhab suggests making a “chia fresca” by adding cucumbers and lemon for additional hydration and vitamin C.

Kefir

Kefir, a cultured drink similar to yogurt, is packed with probiotics that promote gut health. Shelley Balls, RDN, LDN, highlights that kefir contains a broader range of healthy bacteria than yogurt, which may reduce liver inflammation through the gut-liver axis. Adding berries to kefir can provide antioxidants like anthocyanins, which Dr. Salhab notes are “linked to reduced oxidative stress in the liver.”

Pomegranate and Ginger Juice

While high-fructose fruits are generally to be avoided, pomegranate is an exception due to its low fructose content and richness in polyphenols that support lipid metabolism. Ginger is another beneficial addition, known for its ability to reduce inflammation. Research suggests ginger can improve symptoms of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).

Coffee with Cacao

Coffee has been shown to lower the risk of liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular cancer. Dr. Salhab recommends enhancing your morning coffee with cacao, which adds flavanols like epicatechin. These compounds have “anti-inflammatory and endothelial [blood flow] benefits.”

Watermelon

Watermelon is not only hydrating but also a source of citrulline, which supports nitric oxide production. This helps relax blood vessels, allowing more blood, oxygen, and nutrients to nourish vital organs. Dr. Salhab pairs watermelon with ginger for its proven anti-inflammatory effects.

Green Tea with Honey

Green tea is celebrated for its gut health benefits and its potential to reduce liver fat. Dr. Salhab points to a study where people with NAFLD saw improvements after consuming green tea rich in catechins. He advises adding honey for natural sweetness and added polyphenols, which offer antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
