A new COVID-19 variant nicknamed Cicada is raising alarms due to its unusually high number of genetic mutations. Currently detected in 25 states, the strain features over 70 mutations, which is double that of previous dominant lineages.

While the variant currently accounts for less than one percent of U.S. cases, it is spreading more rapidly across Europe. Health officials are monitoring whether these genetic changes will help the virus better evade current immune protections.

The New Strain Has a Nickname, Cicada

Researchers named the BA.3.2 strain Cicada because it appeared to remain dormant for months before suddenly resurfacing on the global stage. It was first identified in South Africa but has recently gained traction in countries like Denmark and Germany.

“I think that BA.3.2 has not shown so far that it is an immediate threat,” says virologist Andrew Pekosz, PhD. “However, it is circulating and continuing to evolve so that increases the likelihood that it could change.”

As scientists gather more data on vaccine effectiveness against this specific strain, the CDC recommends staying current with preventive measures. Maintaining awareness of local transmission levels remains a key strategy for protecting community health.
