A group of residents at a retirement community near Chicago is proving that you are never too old to find purpose in the kitchen. Known as the Rolling Scones, these home cooks use their decades of experience to prepare nutritious meals together every Saturday.

For many participants, the club offers a vital creative outlet that they feared was lost after moving into assisted living.

The hands-on experience allows them to stay active by chopping vegetables, stretching dough, and experimenting with colorful ingredients.

“I made casseroles constantly, when you have that many little children sitting around the table,”

Charleen Kelly, 92, explains of her busy years raising six children.

“This creative need that I have is being fulfilled by creating salads,”

Nancy Rieck, 90, says, noting that she previously focused all her energy on caregiving before joining the group.

The club fosters a sense of connection, allowing friends to share family recipes while learning about the nutritional benefits of fresh produce.

By preparing food for themselves and their loved ones, these seniors are rediscovering their independence one recipe at a time.
