  • Canker sores form inside the mouth and are not contagious, while cold sores appear on the outer lip and spread easily through contact.
  • Identifying the sore’s location and appearance guides treatment choices and helps prevent unnecessary concern.
  • Simple home care and over-the-counter options ease discomfort for both conditions within a week or two.

Many adults notice a small, painful spot in or around the mouth and immediately wonder whether they are dealing with a cold sore or a canker sore. Understanding the two starts with location: cold sores usually develop on the outer edge of the lips, whereas canker sores form on the soft tissues inside the cheeks, under the tongue, or at the base of the gums.

Appearance offers the next clue. A cold sore begins as a cluster of fluid-filled blisters that later crust over, while a canker sore is typically a single, round ulcer with a white or yellow center and a red border.

Knowing the cause helps adults take sensible precautions. Cold sores stem from the herpes simplex virus and can be triggered by stress, sun exposure, or a weakened immune system. Canker sores, by contrast, often trace back to minor injury, acidic foods, or nutritional shortfalls and are not contagious.

Over-the-counter remedies such as topical creams or soothing rinses can ease pain and speed healing for either condition. Persistent or unusually large sores, however, warrant a conversation with a dentist or physician to rule out other concerns.

“Most patients feel immediate relief once they recognize which type of sore they have and begin appropriate care,” notes family dentist Dr. Lisa Moreno.

Daily habits also make a difference. Applying lip balm with SPF, managing stress, and avoiding known dietary triggers can reduce how often these lesions appear.

With clear information and simple steps, adults can address mouth sores quickly and return to comfortable routines without unnecessary worry.
