  • Pair vitamin D sources with foods containing healthy fats to support absorption.
  • Include magnesium-rich options such as leafy greens to aid the body’s vitamin D processes.
  • Consider adding fortified dairy or plant-based alternatives for steady daily intake.

Many adults over 40 are looking for simple ways to keep their bones and immune system strong. One approach involves choosing foods that work together rather than focusing on a single nutrient.

Healthy fats play an important role in how the body handles vitamin D. Salmon, eggs, and avocados provide both the vitamin and the fat that helps carry it through the digestive system.

“Combining vitamin D with a little fat at each meal can make a meaningful difference over time,” notes registered dietitian Karen Ansel.

Magnesium is another nutrient that supports vitamin D activity in the body. Spinach, almonds, and pumpkin seeds offer magnesium along with other minerals that contribute to overall wellness.

“Magnesium helps convert vitamin D into its active form, so including magnesium-rich foods is a practical step,” says Ansel.

Fortified milk, yogurt, and plant-based beverages supply vitamin D in a convenient form. Choosing low-fat or nonfat versions keeps portions moderate while still delivering the nutrient.

Small daily habits, such as adding a handful of nuts to breakfast or drizzling olive oil over vegetables, can gradually improve how the body uses the vitamin D already present in meals.
