  • The FDA has approved the first oral GLP-1 medication, Wegovy (semaglutide), for weight loss in adults who are overweight or have obesity with related health conditions.
  • Clinical trials show the once-daily pill is nearly as effective as the injectable version, helping many users lose significant weight.
  • Side effects are mostly mild and include stomach issues, and the pill must be taken on an empty stomach for best results.

A new needle-free GLP-1 pill offers people an alternative to injections for managing weight and related health risks. The FDA’s approval of the once-daily Wegovy pill provides hope for easier access and added convenience in weight loss treatment plans.

The drug was also cleared to reduce heart attack, stroke, and death risks in people with heart disease who are overweight or have obesity. Wegovy’s effectiveness compares closely to its injectable form, with users seeing notable weight loss in clinical studies.

The pivotal OASIS 4 trial found that those taking the Wegovy pill averaged a 13.6% reduction in their starting body weight over 64 weeks, far more than the placebo group.

Nearly 8 out of 10 participants on the pill lost at least 5% of their body weight, with about 30% losing 20% or more.

“These results are impressive and exciting,” says Dr. Jody Dushay, an endocrinologist at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.

Most side effects were mild, with some users experiencing stomach discomfort such as nausea and vomiting. Side effects led 7% of participants to stop taking the medication.

“Oral and injectable semaglutide have broadly comparable gastrointestinal risk, high rates of mostly mild gastrointestinal symptoms, and low rates of serious events,” says Dr. Melanie Jay, a professor of medicine at NYU Grossman School of Medicine.

The Wegovy pill comes with specific instructions—it should be taken first thing in the morning with a small amount of water, at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking, or taking other medications.

Those who prefer to avoid needles or the hassle of refrigeration may find the pill more appealing, though cost and insurance coverage remain challenges for many.

Another GLP-1 pill from Eli Lilly, orforglipron, may become available soon, offering more options with possibly fewer restrictions.

Stay tuned for updates as more treatments for weight management and related health risks become available for adults over 40.
