FDA Approves Fall Covid Shots for High-Risk Groups
Health Points
- This fall, updated Covid vaccines are approved only for adults 65+, and people of any age with health conditions that raise their risk.
- Vaccines include Moderna for ages 6 months and up, Pfizer for ages 5 and up, and Novavax for ages 12 and up, for those who choose vaccination after talking with their healthcare provider.
- The changes may affect insurance coverage for individuals who aren’t in the eligible groups.
The Food and Drug Administration has given the green light to updated Covid shots, but this time approval is mainly for older adults and people with underlying medical conditions. Eligibility now centers on those 65 or older and individuals—regardless of age—with health issues that could make Covid more serious.
These updated vaccines from Moderna, Pfizer, and Novavax are available for patients who, after consulting with their doctor, decide to receive them. “FDA has now issued marketing authorization for those at higher risk… These vaccines are available for all patients who choose them after consulting with their doctors,” said Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. in an announcement.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s advisory committee will further review the new guidelines to clarify exactly who should get the shots. Previously, Covid vaccines were recommended for nearly everyone aged six months and up.
If you’re not in the eligible group, check with your insurer—coverage may change, and without insurance, a Covid vaccine could cost as much as $140.
