  • Experts warn a powerful winter storm could impact hundreds of thousands of Americans with power outages.
  • Areas from the Rockies to the Northeast may see dangerous temperatures, heavy snow, and ice.
  • Travel disruptions on roads and in the air are expected due to severe conditions.

A significant winter storm is set to sweep across a large part of the United States, bringing concerns for widespread power outages and hazardous weather.

Meteorologists note that the combination of rain, ice, and snow could halt travel and create safety risks for those in affected regions.

“We’re highly confident it’s going to be a really impactful event,” said Bob Oravec, meteorologist at the Weather Prediction Center.

Record-low temperatures up to 30 degrees below average are possible in some areas, with wind chills in the Midwest plummeting as low as -50°F.

Beginning early Friday, locations including Colorado, eastern New Mexico, and parts of the Midwest and Southeast may see significant snowfall, while central and southern states could face treacherous ice.

As the system moves eastward, snow and a mix of freezing rain and ice are expected in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern states through the weekend.

Travelers should prepare for delays, as icy roads and possible flight cancellations are likely.

“Potentially hundreds of thousands of people may go without electricity and heat for days,” warned Jonathan Porter, chief meteorologist at AccuWeather.

Officials advise residents in impacted areas to stay informed and take precautions as meteorological forecasts are updated.

Stay prepared and check local weather updates to keep yourself and loved ones safe during this winter event.
