Where Has the Listeria Outbreak Spread?

Cases have emerged in 18 states: California, Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Carolina, Nevada, Ohio, South Carolina, Texas, Utah, Virginia, and Washington.

What Is Listeria?

According to experts, listeria lives in water, soil, and animal waste, and it can survive refrigeration.

Listeriosis, the illness caused by listeria, poses higher risks for pregnant individuals, older adults, and anyone with weakened immunity.

Listeria infection leads to more deaths from foodborne illness than most other bacteria in the U.S.

Common symptoms may include fever, vomiting, headaches, muscle aches, neck stiffness, confusion, fatigue, and loss of balance.

“Pregnant people may have milder symptoms, but infection can lead to pregnancy loss or serious risks for the baby.”

Symptoms could start within two weeks of eating contaminated food, but can sometimes appear the same day or up to 10 weeks later.

What to Do If You Purchased Affected Products

If you bought any recalled items, the safest action is to dispose of them or take them back to your store, even if they’re stored in your freezer.

Stay updated on recalls and encourage loved ones to check their kitchens for these items.
