Positive Habits for Better Hydration After 40
Health Points
- Setting hydration goals helps track daily water intake and encourages consistency.
- Positive reinforcement, like rewards and fun reminders, motivates lasting hydration habits.
- Personalizing your hydration routine makes drinking water enjoyable and easy to stick with.
Building strong hydration habits is important, especially as our bodies change with age. Simple strategies can make it easier to reach the recommended daily water intake.
When you don’t get enough fluids, dehydration can sneak up before you feel thirsty. Start by aiming for eight 8-ounce glasses a day, or about 64 ounces, and adjust your target as your needs change.
Positive reinforcement means rewarding yourself for meeting goals, making new habits more enjoyable. This approach turns hydration into something to look forward to, rather than a chore.
Choose fun ways to encourage yourself, whether it’s treating yourself after hitting a goal, setting playful reminders, or tracking progress with habit-building apps.
Use a water bottle that suits your lifestyle—get creative with colors, stickers, or even try a smart bottle that tracks your sips. Keeping water handy encourages you to drink more throughout your day.
Flavor your water with fruit or hint of herbs to make it interesting and boost your intake. Flavored sparkling water offers a refreshing alternative without added sugar.
Pair water with meals and add foods high in water content, like cucumbers or watermelon. Soups and herbal teas can also help with daily hydration.
Maintaining these habits over time helps ensure long-term success with staying hydrated. Track your progress, celebrate your wins, and keep building on your routines for a healthier future.
Kicking dehydration to the curb is an empowering step toward better well-being. Embrace positive reinforcement, and enjoy the benefits of daily hydration at any age.

I have never been a big water drinker. I never feel thirsty not too often anyway. I know I don’t drink enough water, but I don’t even think about it during the day. I take water with a whole bunch of supplements in the morning and night, but it’s probably not enough for a full day.
