How Long Should You Spend on the Toilet?
Health Points
- Healthy bowel movements should take under five minutes.
- Sitting too long on the toilet can increase your risk of hemorrhoids.
- Quick bowel habits may signal balanced fiber intake and gut health.
Bowel habits can be unique for everyone, but healthy bathroom visits shouldn’t take a long time. Experts emphasize that successful trips to the toilet are usually short and do not require extra effort.
“If the magic is not happening within five minutes, it’s not going to happen,” Dr. Trisha Pasricha explained.
Taking longer than five minutes or needing to strain regularly might point to issues such as low dietary fiber or pelvic floor challenges. Overstaying can also increase the risk of developing hemorrhoids, which, while not dangerous, can be painful or uncomfortable.
Developing supportive routines can be key. Consider leaving devices outside the bathroom, enjoying a warm morning drink, gentle movement, fiber-focused meals, and relaxation techniques to encourage healthy bowel habits.
If you see sudden, ongoing changes in your bathroom routine, it’s wise to consult your doctor, as this may reflect underlying health concerns.
