Sprout Organics has voluntarily recalled one lot of its Sweet Potato, Apple and Spinach baby food pouches after discovering they may contain elevated levels of lead. The recall, announced through the FDA, impacts products sold primarily at Walgreens and certain independent retailers in the Southern United States last fall.
According to the FDA, lead is a toxic metal that can be absorbed by plants and poses a significant health risk, especially for children. No illnesses have been reported so far, but the company urges anyone with the recalled products to check the lot code and expiration date on the package and return affected items for a refund.
“If a child is exposed to enough lead for a protracted period of time, this can affect learning and development or cause other long-term health problems,” the FDA stated.
