The demand for physical books continues to grow in the U.S., outpacing even movie ticket sales. Barnes & Noble is tapping into this trend, opening more locations across the country in response to rising interest in neighborhood bookstores.
The resurgence of Barnes & Noble is driven by a renewed focus on community-centered store layouts and local bookselling teams. The chain reports that its new store concepts are attracting significant crowds and boosting sales beyond expectations.
“The key insight that I have is that it is about the bookselling team and it’s about how you take all of this huge number of books and arrange them and display them in a manner which really engages with your local community,” explained Barnes & Noble CEO James Daunt.
With 34 new stores already opened in 2025 and 31 more planned by year’s end, Barnes & Noble locations are becoming vibrant hubs featuring not just books, but also cafés, gifts, and interactive sections for all ages.
The company is expanding into states such as Washington, Louisiana, California, Tennessee, Idaho, Florida, New York, Connecticut, Texas, Colorado, Michigan, Washington D.C., Ohio, and Pennsylvania. Many new sites are larger and tailored to offer a wide selection of books and community spaces.
“Sales in the new stores with their new design and format are exceeding our forecasts, people are lining up around the block for openings and with a strong Fall publishing we expect a great Holiday season,” Barnes & Noble stated.
